Studying pawn breaks means learning which pawn advance opens lines in your structure. A pawn break attacks an enemy pawn to open a file or diagonal for your pieces.

Once the pieces are out, a position needs a pawn break to change. Knowing the right break for your structure turns development into a plan; without one, pieces get shuffled while nothing happens.
How to do it
- 1Name the break for your structure, such as ...c5 or ...f6 against a French pawn chain.
- 2Put the pieces that will use the opened line in place first.
- 3Play the break when your pieces are ready, not merely when it is legal.
